Rheumatologists Perceive More Patients are Taking Simponi than Cimzia

Simponi (golimumab) is a fully human monoclonal antibody against tumore necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha for the potential treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, asthma, and ulcerative colitis. In RA, Simponi is a second-generation TNF-inhibitor following Johnson & Johnson/Merck & Co.'s Remicade, and patients will be able to administer the therapy either by subcutaneous (SC) injection or intravenous (IV) infusion. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, part of Johnson & Johnson, won US approval of extended-release Invega (paliperidone), an atypical antipsychotic, as a treatment for schizophrenia in adolescents 12 to 17 years.  The drug was first approved in the US in December 2006 to treat adults with schizophrenia, a complex, chronic brain disorder that causes a variety of symptoms, including hearing voices, having fixed false beliefs or delusions, disorganized thinking and unusual behaviors. Johnson & Johnson is negotiating a takeover bid for orthopedic specialist Synthes in an effort to diversify its healthcare business and strengthen its presence in the orthopedic trauma market.
