Datamonitor attended the 2011 International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) European Congress on Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis (ECCEO) in Valencia, Spain, which ran over March 23–26, 2011. Datamonitor focused on developments in the osteoporosis field and, in reviewing the meeting, identified the following key conclusions: Long-term safety of bisphosphonates was a key theme at this year’s meeting with researchers looking to better understand the causative factors involved and identifying patients at risk. Non-bisphosphonate osteoporosis drug companies, such as Amgen and Servier, seized this opportunity and used this meeting to stress the safety profiles of their products in an attempt to capture market share through presenting long-term clinical trial data. Amgen's and GlaxoSmithKline's main goal at ECCEO-11 was to educate delegates regarding Prolia's unique mechanism of action and its key differentiators, such as its mode of administration and efficacy. Long-term safety data were presented in an attempt to address Phase III trial issues; however, it is unlikely that physicians will be persuaded to use Prolia as a first-line therapy in the near term.
